I had VW pay (partially) for my heads to be replaced twice, but that was 10 years ago. I wouldn't expect any warranty coverage on a 17 year old car, but you can always ask. The coolant in there has long since broken down and formed acids that have corroded your heads and case. Go ahead and call VWoA directly, the dealer is likely to laugh in your face.
