Subject: Diesel pickup tube orientation? (EKTA Q?)

Hi, hopefully this is a quick question for someone with an EKTA or who has had a vanagon diesel oil pan off recently...

This question is for a vanagon diesel with the stock 1.6 engine, although I think all the I-4 gas vanagon people have the same thing. I need to know what is the proper orientation for the metal cap that holds the filtering screen on on the bottom of the oil pump pickup tube. About 1/4 or so of the circumference of this circular metal cap is flanged outwards, such that the lip of the cap is parallel to the bottom of the oil pan (as opposed to the rest of the way around the cap, which is bent up around the end of the pickup tube. This is the metal cap that has the off-centre circular hole in the bottom to provide an inlet for oil into the tube.

So which way should the bent-down flat flange part of the cap face, when the pump is installed in the engine? Forward (flywheel side), aft (pulley and belt side), or right or left or ?? I took it apart to clean the screen, as per Bentley, but my helpful 4-year-old picked up the pieces I had carefully laid out to preserve orientation, and randomized everything. Bentley photos do not show this part well.

Advice would be very helpful. Thanks!

T.
