The guy in the old army jeep did a double take as the two of us whizzed by on a tandem while "flying" down Mt Lemmon, near Tucson, AZ. He gave chase, but we rapidly pulled away from him, and didn't see him again till well after the bottom of the mountain.

"This ol' jeep maxes out around 55 mph", he said, after we both pulled over, "and you guys turned into a speck in nothing flat! You must have been doin' at least 65."

We had climbed the mountain and won the tandem division, which was a piece of cake, since we were one of two entries in the division. 21 miles with an elevation gain of 7000 feet in 3:56. To the minute, the same time I had achieved the previous year on a single!

Man! If you really want a rush, find a good straight downhill run and do it on a tandem with a fat guy!

wow 60+ on a road bike is haulin balls, I've hit 50ish and I race, but 60 is way PRO speed, if you have the hill do it, did a race in Las Vagas and it was route 160? I hit 55mph.

make dure you have really nice tires and tubes, because if the tires heat up and BLOW off its GAME OVER.. no leathers here. ;)
