Rachel,

I'm not getting a lot of resistance at all. It really does feel like the pump gears are spinning and sucking air. I've checked and rechecked and am 99% sure the socket is seated correctly--although I do have to admit it is pretty much impossible to see with my own eyes.

I have a spare pump, and I'm checked and double checked that I'm not turning it backwards. But, heck, if I still can't prime it after spinning for a few minutes, I'll try reverse just for the heck of it... ;-)

I don't think the pump itself is, in fact, submerged. I'm speaking of the geared part of the pump. Clearly, the business (bottom) end of the pump pickup tube is submerged in the oil in the sump, but remember this is a diesel, which is an I-4 tilted 55 degrees on its side. The tube is 6 - 8 inches long and descends at, what, a 30 degree angle or so? I'd have to guess the pump is in the range of 1-3 inches above the surface of the oil in the pan. I think my problem is I have to pull the oil up that tube.

Aaargh!
