Lee, let me add something to the (correct) answers which have been given so far. Firsty, the circuit is shown on page 97.145 for your ī91 type. Its basically the same as for the 87 model (page 97.141). Stage 1 and stage 2 basically means that the power which is sent to the fan is reduced by the serial resistance, which is located behind the left headlight (big, round ceramic dude with three connectors, about 35$ at VWoA). You can see in current track 36 on that page, how the cable from the A/C relay enters the resistance at one end and how the cable from the 2nd stage relay enters the resistance in the middle (actually the middle pin on the real resistance is off-center). The third stage is powered directly from the battery and switched on and off from the 102 degree celsius sensor on the water cooling radiator. Thatīs why the 3rd stage works when the resistance is blown. (and it means as well that the fan is not switched on yet when the water temp reaches 95 degrees or when the A/C is switched on). What the diagram shows as well is that the 3rd stage relay, once it closes, sends power to the A/C clutch relay, which is closed without power, not open. Therefore, the clutch is disengaged once the 102 degrees are reached, to allow the fan to cool the water on the hurricane stage without receiving additional heat from the A/C cooler. (Just for the record and the archive: the (original) cable from the 95 degree thermoswitch to the resistance in my 87 Westy is R/BK color-coded, not R/W; the cable from S1 to the 102 degree thermoswitch is R/W, not BK; and the cable from the 2nd stage relay to pin one of the resistance is BK, not R/BK). > >I know I asked this before but now it is summer and hot, and I need > >to fix.
