Think about it! Call a VW Dealer and ask him if it requires a gasket. If its an oil pump and it can leak oil to the outside it just stands to reason it requires a gasket. I have an 83 AirCooled and it has a gasket between the case and the front housing of the pump. If the pump is an internal part (and thats what it looks like to me) that would only leak back inside the engine it could possibly just be a precision machine fit. It looks to me like a precision fit ring that goes from the block to the oil pump. See picture at http://williamwareagency.com/forsale/stanvan/pump-d.jpg To prime this pump: Remove the outside housing that holds the oil cooler, oil filter and pump STP down the hole with a hand held squirt gun or Turkey Baster, fill it till it overruns and re-assemble the outside components. You can also turn the engine with the starter after you get the parts back on (oil filter off) and see if it primed properly.
