After recently getting my A/C working on my '85, I was disappointed with the idle. It was impossible to drive without some fancy footwork. For some reason--and I have heard this from other '85 owners--there is no idle assist when the A/C is on. The second solenoid shown in the Bentley, next to the P/S solenoid, is not there and never was, judging by the original paint. What I did was re-wire the P/S solenoid to work when the A/C compressor kicks in. I grounded the one leg and ran a wire from the compressor clutch over to the other pin. Now, whenever the compressor comes on, the idle is fine. As soon as the compressor kicks off, everything is back to normal. I don't have the assist for the P/S anymore, but it only functioned when the wheel was locked full left or right. It certainly doesn't come in to play much as these vans will turn on a dime. Anyone have an '85 with both solenoids from the factory? I assumed the campers had Westfalia installed A/C. Maybe that's not correct. Jay '85 Westy (The Hindenburg) |
