Subject: More on my S&S Headers

My mechanic was looking at an idle problem I've been experiencing and he turned up another issue with the S&S headers I installed last month: They don't have a test port ahead of the catalytic converter. He said my tail-pipe emissions were very clean but he needs to be able to test the exhaust pre-cat as well. So, I guess I'm going to have my header shop weld one on.

All in all, my experience with the S&S headers has not been good. (Copying them this message so maybe they'll respond to the list about my concerns.) Here are the problems I've had:

* Needed to cut and weld on an extra 1/2 inch on the rear-left header (see attached pic 'ss1.jpg').

* Had to cut left-side of skid bar where front header passed by. Then had to weld a piece of steel onto bottom of skid bar below cut to reinforce it.

* Had to have both front headers given new, thicker gaskets and retightened. Looks like the rear-right flange isn't altogether flush now either, so need to have it looked at. I honestly don't think any of the header flanges met up cleanly with the heads.

* Need to add pre-catalytic converter test port.

The headers were reasonably priced, but I'm sure spending a lot for my header guy to make up for the poor quality of these headers. Live and learn, I suppose.

...Scott
