Subject:      Oil pressure warning light at idle?

OK, i've got the oil pressure warning light coming on at idle but it goes away when I step on the gas.  I know the manual says that a little flickering is ok but this is full on.  This is an 80 Vanagon.  I can't decide whether to replace the oil pump or put new bearings in it.  Either way I will have to pull the engine.  Has anyone ever replaced an oil pump to solve their oil pressure problems?
