ben, if the tank is completely clean (no gas smell)you could weld it IMHO if the tank even slightly smells of gas, it's a no go, just make sure to add some braces across the weld, and either make an air-tight bead, or get motorcycle gas tank sealer and coat the tank after you are done welding, or better yet, use both methods.
