There's a small quaint little campground a mile of Hwy 19 by the Nantahal Outdoor Center just outside Bryson City we've used in the past, but the road is narrow in there. Forget the name, but the road is just off the NOC drag. Silver Creek or Silvermines campground, something like that. This may be too far from the Asheville area, but the side trip would be worth it. Friend of mine is the Pres. of NOC these days. If you go by there, you have to go up the hill to Relia's Garden Restaurant, pricey, but casual. Appalachian Trail crosses there so you can hike a mile or 4 or 5 of it if you need some excercise.
