Subject: 85 cutting out/stalling in Pueblo - Update

Final (hopefully) update to the 85 Westy cutting out/stalling problem in Pueblo, CO: The symptom was cutting out and eventually stalling when it was really hot outside. Would restart and run fine after cooling for about 20 minutes. A fuel pump seems to have solved the problem. After leaving Pueblo, the symptoms returned about 50 miles down the road, just as it got to 100F outside. I got out Bentley and the VOM and learned how to test all the sensors. All checked out OK. Then I found Len Smith, the Canon City, CO VW mechanic/junkyard proprietor, who told me I ought to try putting in one of his junkyard fuel pumps, because he ran into a similar problem with a Rabbit once, and a fuel pump solved it. I put in the fuel pump, drove around for a long time (it was still very hot out), and the problem never happened again. Got back to Seattle fine (except for the separated tire casing in Casper, WY....) -Will
