Hi Dennis and good day to you!

I think everyone who knows about enhancing performance knows that when you produce more power it will usually cost you in mileage, unless you have more efficient aspiration....i.e. variable valve timing, free flow intake and exhaust, fuel injection vs carbs......a more modern air/fuel map and so on. I think that a blanket negative statement such as yours would have kept mechanical engineering in the dark ages of carburators and stock cast-iron exhaust manifolds. Remember this suggestion is a performance tip that has already been written about by Gene Berg Enterprises. So relax and take it all in with a grain of salt. This list is a forum for all who wish to get the most out of their beloved vanagon. Everyone has the right to modify their motor configuration and if you would like to add ratio rockers, S & S exhaust, chip your FI or whatever that is the freedom and beauty of customizing your van and if you would wish to produce less emissions you might consider switching to CNG or help those at MIT w/ their fuel cell technology....which we will all switch to when we run out of fossil fuels in 50 years.

Let's see some Dyno results! You can't change the laws of phyics which is the major limitation of the vanagon engine. Advancing the timing will get some more low end response but will not increase power at top end. It will also increase NOx emissions and pre-ignition ping. As for the fuel injection, if the mixture is changed to get more power, than emissions must be increased and fuel economy decreased. No free lunch here.

Hey digijet gang, water cooled 1.9 L only

I have tried to help those who own 1.9 liter watercooled motors by advising advancing the timing to 6 degrees before top dead center.

Now if you want an increase power by another 12 percent, add a programmable fuel injection from Gene Berg. It utilizes MS / DOS to map the engine requirements at all rpms.....search Gene Berg and look up PEFI.......you'll be over 100 hp without having to modify your valve train....digijets this is for you, digiphants might be able to use this technology too......
