Subject: '84 dying in hot weather (long)

Scenario -

Thursday night - drive a few blocks to corner drug store. Wait 20 minutes for prescriptions. Try to go home. No start. Starter fine, but smell of fuel from exhaust. Wiggle high-tension wires, and connection from FI cable to ECU. Starts and runs okay.

Friday morning - runs better than ever. 18-wheelers on I-16 going 75+. I follow, van wants to go faster, but I hold it at 4400 rpm.

Friday afternoon (95 deg F), runs okay while on I-16, Once I get on local streets it wants to die while waiting at stop signs and stop lights. AC is on as usual, idle set to well over 1200 rpm w/o A/C on, but runs around 800 with it on (yes air boost working). Dies twice, but fortunately starter motor works, and it restarts immediately. Dies at next red light, and will not restart even though starter working fine. Some bystanders help me push van into used car lot. Repeat the shaking of the wires, etc. Van starts and runs okay.

All ignition parts 18 months old or newer. Behavior is similar to when I had dirt on connection between FI cable and ECU. I cleaned connector tonight once van had cooled down. Also, had similar problem before AFM was replaced almost 4 years ago. Relays in box over coil look like they are in good shape.

Where do I start looking for causes?
