Chris,

When I first bought my Westy, I ran around and pushed buttons and pulled knobs all over it. My wife was at my shoulder, asking, "Should you really be doing that?"

I figured out most of it without a manual (which I actually had). I'll bet that those of us who are button experimenters know a lot more about how our vans work than do the more cautious types (probably more about how to break things, too!).
