In case anyone wonders why the eraser trick works, it is because the erasers - depending on the type - have an abrasive in them. Some more so than others. Another unrelated little trick is to use backing soda to remove minor smudges off your vans paint. Also can be use to polish out minor scratches. The soda should be applied to a moist ragm, so that is does not disolve, then lightly rub. Test on a not-so-obvious before using in more visible areas.
