There aren't any van owners laughing at you. You've been fortunate enough that you haven't had your engine spread out all over the floor in your garage. After a rebuild job or two a guy finds a lot of gizmos and oddities about VW engines, be they Air Cooled, WaserBoxers or Diesel. They all have oddities that make them German Engineered. I haven't looked in my owners manual but I would almost bet its not mentioned there.
