Why not just call a AAA Wrecker and tell him you can't get your van started and they will tow it home where the other set of keys are.

really? I'd assumed this to be another job on my Vanagon fix-it list. Like Terry wrote, I cannot push the drivers door lock button from the inside but I can use the key to lock the door from the outside, this is how it was designed?
