How many miles? good question....The odometer was stuck at 78,000 when I bought my 85GL from auto import VW dealership in Brainerd, MN, for $2800, in 1994. Then I fixed the odometer in 1995, and it has been stuck at 87,000 ever since. My van is rust free, but I drive it a lot so it has some dents and dings. I drive it a lot in the summer, but not in the winter and I try to take care of it, because vanagons are neato, and not easily replaceable. any problems? surprisingly, not really. I drove for three years without doing anything to it other than adding some ford ranger rear view mirrors, because for some reason there was no mirrors on it when I bought it. Then I got a head gasket leak, and fixed it, and up until this spring, I never did anything but change the oil after every 2 to 3 road trips, and basic stuff like brake pads and plugs, etc. This spring Bessie got a lot of work done, including new AFM, plugs, cap and rotor, idle air stabilizer, new shocks all around, clean grounds, CV joints, all new exhaust, fresh brake fluid, fuel pressure reg, fuel pump, and new fuel lines. I think thats about it, but what a great vehicle! It's great to be able to fix it myself, and to know how and why it works like it does(most of the time anyways!) thanks once again to the list for all the advice. Now I am able to keep my van running for many more happy summers of fun. bye, Kim 85GL
