Hi all, I came across the following sites during my research for retrofitting the AC on my Westy Syncro. Some of these refrigerants require you to be certified to buy them. In that case go to the imaca site, download the study manual, study it for 30 minutes, pay 20 bucks and take the cerification test to become MVAC (Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning)certified. You can then buy any type of auto refrigerants. I did this. However I took the test at Mainstream Engineering Corp (www.quick.com)25 questions. I got 24 right-you need 21 right to pass. I guess I should have studied for the recommended hour. I can now proudly show off my certificate. You get a downloaded copy of it right away, then get a laminated wallet card in the mail afew days later. Do I feel qualified to to service and repair vehicle AC systems? No. But I wonder how many "repair" shops have technicians as qualified as I now am. I CAN service my own now or just buy refrigerants. Currently you don't need to be certified to buy R-134a but that is due to change soon. Anyway here are the sites:

www.autofrost-refrigerants.com www.lenzdist.com (they distribut several types) www.frigc.com www.imaca.com www.gti16v.org/tb879503.htm (tech bulletin for converting VW's including Vanagon to R134a) www.freezonerb276.com

This is by no means all the sites or types of alternative refrigerants out there, but it's a start. I'll probably just do as Phaedra did and use the Wal Mart conversion kit. It sounds easy.

Bye
