Yes, Vanagon can play tricks, that is not knew. That's what your are seeing I think.

My suggestion: take away the back bench (easy), clean the mess under the bench, replace the seals in the heater (2) , they are very cheap from your dealer:. 861 819 297, gasket for the valve, and 867 819 037, sealing washer for the bleeder screw. Then tighten the hose clamps properly, thighten the bleeder screw properly, and put the bench back in.

You also might want to leave the valve lever to the 'close' position - see your owner's manual. Only open it when you need the heater, or when you bleed or flush the system.

That's what I did 2 years ago, it is fine so far, no leak. Impressive for a wasserleaker, I agree.
