After experiencing few stumbling problems(crud) in my Westy while ago i added 1 more filter upstream from pump as shown in Bentley on page20.27. It's one normaly used on air-cooled, white square plastic less than 5 bucks. Some Vanagons had both filters and some only one, large metal canister type downstream from pump so all crud accumulated inside the pump. Has been working fine for me 2 years now.
