I drove through the bear countries in Alaska and many other places with black bears and grizzlies and never had any problem. My wife is a bear freak and just the thought of it frightens her. She slept in the bottom. The safest is to have the top down, of course. No food may be open and around inside the camper. Not even fruits. They smell all kind of things from far.
