Folks, there are SEVERAL designs when comes to the fuel-tank / 
fuel-filter-type-and-placement  combo...here is MY understanding...

up to 1985 had not filter in the fuel tank, hence the placement of the 
filter before the fuel pump (except in California vans, filter was after 
fuel pump...).

Later (86 up) vans had a small filter inside the tank (got this info from 
RonBusDepot), so they went with another large filter after the fuel pump 
(except vehicles with gas heater...they also put a small filter before the 
T-piece going to the gas heater, piece that is before the fuel pump)

I think what I'll do is replace my standard small one BEFORE the fuel pump 
(part 133 133 511), but also add a large, standard one found on later vans 
(part 1H0 201 511) AFTER the fuel pump.  I will be all covered. No crud 
goes in fuel pump, no crud goes in engine. I have not done this, but I am 
planning on doing it before long, we are leaving next sunday for 3 weeks. I 
also plan on dremmelling (sp?) out my current filter when I take it out to 
see if it did any real work - how much crud was filtered. I will report, 
for you enjoyment! (or not).
