I think the '86+ had some kind of screen in the tank? My '85 had only the plastic filter before the pump. ( I would rather change the plastic filter once in a while.) I added the large metal filter after the pump. Usually any addition VW makes must be for a good reason--they are too "thrifty" to add it out of the goodness of their heart. Does your '85 not have a filter before the pump? If your fuel pump whines, it is probably starved for fuel at the inlet.
