Intermittent stalling & starting

my 84' vanagon, auto trans; gives me problems starting although I have fuel, new plugs, & fuel filter. The engine cranks and I can smell fuel. Let it sit for a several hours and "bang"... starts with no problem! This was happening about a month or two ago, and I just scheduled my errands around the problem. After about a week, the problem seemed to work itself out..... and she ran fine & started fine after that. (for a while) Now just recently, it will stall at a traffic stop if I do not shift it to neutral and give it gas. If it so happens to stall and shut off, I'm not gonna be able to start it for a couple of hours! (go figure???) So, as I write this, it runs very weak, and I can only go on errands that will allow several hours between stopping and starting.....??? Please e-mail me with any help or advice....Bill jarsofclay@ameritech.net
