Dear list members,


Was pushing my van (1982 air-cooled) a bit hard into a headwind ..... lost power .... lost of blue smoke and a blown output shaft seal. Quart of oil on ground.   Shut her off and let cool.  When started blew the air breather baffle off and oil all over engine.


Obviously lots of pressure getting in crankcase.  What is probable cause?  Valves?  Hole in piston?
or what?  Am heading back to the Twin Cities with a dolly on tuesday to tow home and pull engine.


Am prepping the wife for a couple grand for a rebuild.  Suggestions?  AVP, Boston Engine, or other rebuilt?
