i've been working on putting down the mastic sheets in our westy, and it's
not the quickest process in the world.  i am finally down to the edges of
the main floor area, and things are going well.  even with the interior
removed, and single layers on the rear deck, slope, and main floor, the
sound of the engine is very much reduced.  my wife and i can talk now with
relative ease (with the windows closed *s*).  the asphalt in the pads is a
bit stinky (industrial smelling), and i don't know if that would be there
with the viscoelastic sheets.  for our upcoming trip they will be the only
soundproofing, but once we're back i will again remove the interior and put
down the coolpatch and the nasa insulation, and do the walls and under the
front seats/carpet.

i also picked up a pair of seat tracks with hardware courtesy of benT and
his gang of vanagon bricoleurs (thanks, jero!), and spent a couple of hours
being thickheaded about how things went together (including the seat)...must
have been the mastic fumes.  in the end we're cutting the tracks to 23 7/8"
and only going to groove our floor that much to fit over them.  can anyone
recommend a sealent for the bolt-ends that stick through the floor for
underbody rust protection?  VW uses some sort of white goop that is
flexible, nonsetting, and yet thick as hell (very glue-like).  anyone know
where i can get some of that?
