Don; The whole engine case must be airtight to prevent vacuum leaks since the crankcase ventilation is connected upstream from the air box. I have heard of a bad seal at the base of the dip stick tube letting in enough unmetered air to cause poor running. Also check the two inch rubber tubes that connect to the intake runners.
