I met a gentleman that had a later model Westy, with a Wilson 2000 magnetic base loaded antenna on his roof rack.

I asked him about the ground plane thing, and his response was, that he had riveted a steel plate under the roof rack, and the riveted a smaller plate to the top of the rack, to stick the antenna on.

I guess the plate under the rack served as a sort of ground plane, and he told me there is enough metal under the pop-top to serve as a ground plane also.

He said it worked well.

I know the Wilson antenna is excellent, but if in fact it worked good in this situation, I am sceptical.
