It's the VW V(R)6 with a cylinder deleted. Otherwise it's the same engine (initially called VR5), still SOHC 2 valves per cylinder.

Honda of course made twostroke V-triple bike engines in the 80s.

The Dune Beetle is an exercise, not a production model (anyway, this was the case when I last checked the website).
