I had one '85 Jetta that did this valve lifter sound every time I started it for the 142,000 miles I owned it and it seemed to be of no consequence. Seemed like most of the '85 Jettas, Golfs, Passats (Quantums) did this as well. The piston rod slap noises it made worried me enough that I got them to tear the engine down twice (under warranty) until it didn't make THAT noise anymore. Mine '84 was clicking more than usual this morning. Did not use the van yesterday. By the time I got to work, it was running fine. Its due for a quart of Riselone.
