Joachim,

Yes, you need to take the steering wheel off, perhaps a little complex for the stupid little plastic switch, but not that bad. (Straighten the wheels before you take the steering wheel off, or you will need to pull and install the steering wheel again - ask me how I know)

I did not need to drill anything, I don't think you will either - perhaps to remove the key part of the ignition switch, but not the electical connector part. Did not need any special tools - was a little hard to get the Sleeve or spacer off, but I believe I used a block of wood and a hammer and lightly tapped and it came off.

Solved my hot-start problem - thank to Jim D (of LiMBO Fame) for the advice!

Go for it!

>>>to remove the ignition switch, the Bentley seems to imply that it is necessary to take the steering wheel off, remove various spacers and sleeves off the column, and finally remove the steering wheel lock housing (containing both the lock cylinder and ignition switch), all the while using special VW spacer/sleeve removing tools.

Seems like a huge PITA. Is there no simpler way to get the switch out? After all, I can remove the plastic steering column covers and drill a little hole in the lock housing to release the pin that holds the lock cylinder...would the ignition switch slide right out along with the lock cylinder, or am I doomed to the Bentley way?

Many thanks, Joachim 90 GL
