Larry,

VW tried to put a lot of distance between the Type 3 and Type 1 engine. While the Type 3's did get nifty stuff like dual carbs and FI early on and had the horizontal cooling fan they were mechanically identical to the Type 1's.

An earlier post in this thread said that the loafs had Type 4 engines. This is correct starting in '72. Before that they had an upright Type 1. They did had the IRS tranaxle but retained the VW wide 5 wheels long after they disappeared from the Beetle.

Donno what I was thinking. Have had a lot of type 3's, but it's been about 30 years since I even looked at a Beetle engine. Guess those brain cells have died. :-(
