With transverse engines there's no front end, but a front SIDE. The pulley end in such cases is the pulley end, not the "front". Saying anything else is just nonsense.

No way. Front is front. Rear is not rear. The two cannot be the same (calling the pulley end of a rear-engined vehicle "front" is an oxymoron). Front end of engine is that closest to headlights, no matter whether it has a pulley or flywheel attached.

Such usage is NOT defined by popular opinion. Terry, you missed your dose of Z-B.
