However, after CARB came to its senses regarding MTBE and its removal as an fuel oxygenator, the EPA refused to allow California to proceed to meet the California emission standards WITHOUT oxygenated gasoline, REQUIRING California to switch to ethanol blended gasoline. A bit weird, when you consider that California's standards are more stringent that the Federal ones.

BTW, the 2002 Nissan Sentra CA (as in CAlifornia) qualifies as as Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle meeting the 2004 standard and, according to its PR, produces LESS pollution on a 10 mile daily commute than an older vehicle sitting unused in a parking spot...
