Cylinder #1 on the diesel engine is the one closest to the pulleys and farthest from the flywheel. Don't get confused by the terms front and rear. Each engine has its own cylinder numbering scheme. For a barrel of laughs, drink a couple beers and flip through an old 'Motor' manual or 'Chilton' that covers all makes and models of American cars for a given year and look at the variety of cylinder numbering and firing order specs.
