I must say the 094 5-speed isn't a wonderful thing. first is VERY low, and you may well end up not bothering with it. First is also very awkwardly located, behind reverse, making 2nd nonintuitive to select. I suspect VW intended first as an occasional-use thing.

Also the gearshift has the typical sloppy VW feel.

My 094 is sitting in bits, and will probably remain so permanently.

When you talk about a VW transmission or any integrated transaxle, it is generally assumed to mean the entire thing, diff & all (may be a different story with a separable diff as in a Corvair Powerglide). Don't forget, too, that the diff is actually part of the transmission; it transmits power from the engine to the wheels.
