My "presently-working -300 mile-fix" is to have serrated the shaft-along its length-on which the "slipping" gear is mounted. I tried once with the original shaft, and I distorted it so badly that I feared cracking the gear. I had to replace the shaft by purchasing 3 MM rod from MSC Direct @ www.MSC.Direct.com. Using a fine jewelers file and a small chisel, and a cushioned vise-clamped technique, I cut four shallow, barely visible, 1/4 inch lines along the shaft, but which raised the OD of the shaft enough to give a "bite" to the shaft-gear mating surface, and I Super-Glued the mating surfaces, carefully avoiding gluing my fingers to the connection. Make sure that you note the position of the shaft, vis a vis the gears, and the gears' teeth directions. You get one chance to do this correctly.

Buy something else, from MSC, or the shipping and handling charges will be outrageous in comparison to the $.99 price for the hard-to-find (damn near impossible)3 MM rod. If anyone needs or wants a piece about 2 and one half inches long (enough to do the job, let me know by e-mail.. I'll expect a SASE for the transaction. (self-addressed, stamped envelope).

The original source for this "how to" information is a posting by SpaceKommander on September 3, 2000. in the Archives as "Another Odometer Fix."
