One thing to be careful of is the "T" connections that lead up from the main heater hoses. They tend to be a bit fragile from age. Wouldn't be at all a bad idea to replace them at the same time. Prepare to get a coolant bath if you do.

Yes, you can clamp off the hoses and stay fairly dry. If you don't replace those "T"s, you should pretty much be OK.

Be sure to replace any o-rings you encounter while in there. More often than not, it is the o-rings that are the cause of the problem in the first place.
