Rick, Go to your local VW dealer and order a 90-91 Vanagon antenna. It is totally retractable ( manual) and will allow you to pass through carwashes, or parking without ripping the standard "I'm up all the time " one off. I have replaced the darn thing 3 times, twice using a Pep Boy's replacement. I got tired of doing the job, so I jumped on the retractable, and I haven't replaced it since. Price? $41.00. To replace it, with whatever style you choose, take out the upper grill, and the headlamp bucket, and ashtray. Unplug the old one from the ashtray hole, pull it out of there tying a string to the old wire. Drop the new one in the antenna hole, with the string tied to the new wire, pull it through to the radio, with the string, button everything up, your done.
