A small room air conditioner is about 5 to 6 thousand BTU. Automotive air conditioners are normally manufactured to cool about 2000 cubic feet since they are fighting sun heat, heat absorbed by the vehicle. I'd rate a 5000 BTU as about 1/5 the capacity of a standard automotive AC installation. I use a 5000 BTU as a portable on my Westfalia http://blackhead.netfirms.com/ac_unit.htm it cools the Westy very good up to 100 degrees if you're in the shade and at night but falls a little short if you have to park in the sun.
