Hi Ian,
T3 were never sold new in New Zealand, the ones you will find here are all
private imports from either Aus, S.A., US or Germany. I have a Westfalia
that originally came from Austria!
Mechanical parts are available from various dealers, but in some cases there
may be a 2 to 3 week wait for parts that are not on stock in the country,
less if they can be sourced from Australia.
Example: Front radiator hose, bottom one avaialble, top one ex Aus or VW
Singapore. 10 day wait.
There are various VW shops that are up with these models, but definitely not
your normal "all models serviced" shops.
As an example in Auckland you have the official VW dealer, Continentals, or
a non VW dealership shop but still a VW Audi specialist such as Qualitat
motors.
I have a brother that works at Qualitats and he has personally rebuilt
several WBX motors, and is in fact doing one at present.
I am sure there are equivalents in Wellington.
Importing should be straight forward, I think at most you would have to pay
GST (12.5%) on the freight costs to NZ when you land the vehicle. It would
need to be "Vinned", that is checked it complies with NZ laws. This would
basically consist of a check on its road worthiness, seat belt compliance
and maybe a high stop light.
Cost is around the NZ$350.00 mark. You can then get it registered.
Registration for 12 months cost about NZ$280.00.
We have a 6 monthly "warrant of fitness" check here which would be
mandatory for your vehicle, cost is about NZ$35.00.
My advice would be to get any mechanical defects fixed before you import it
to New Zealand and make sure the van has NO rust.
