I've got a bunch of AC parts from my '84 Van GL. Here's a thought - If you were thinking of mounting it in a case the size of a regular A/C unit you could skip the things like inverter, dead batteries, new/second alternator.

I say get a bunch of this stuff, convert it over, have new hoses and use the compressor/evaporator, etc... from a VW. OR you could just mount it into your engine compartment.
