Subject: oxidation on a dark-colored pop-top: any consensus on a solution?

I have a 1990 Multivan with a burgundy-colored Westy top. It's oxidized through the years and, because of its dark color, doesn't look very good. I've asked various professionals about a fix for the problem, but no one seems to have a solution.

Apparently (according to a body shop) painting won't work. Buffing the finish can cause further damage, according to a detailer.

Is there any consensus within this group of how to make a dark-colored pop-top look good again?
