From my experience, don't assume you have any "grace period with CV joints."

My own 68 Bus (a Sundial Camper) had CV troubles in the first year I owned
it.  And both times, before 30 minutes had passed from hearing the first
click, the noise was so loud it sounded like Gimli the Dwarf hammering on
the axles, as I finally coasted into the garage and replaced them (and
learned to check and pack them regularly).

I have experienced CV separation while on the road and was stranded between
nowhere and anywhere. A long stretch of empty highway in Alaska at the
time......and the distances between anywhere and nowhere can be great up
there. As luck would have it, there was this trucker.............!

Anyway, t'was not my beloved Vanagon that did it to me, but my '68 Bus.
