Subject: 1980 Westy sliding door question
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
Hello all,
New to VW's new to the list and new to my 1980 Westphalia. I will preference
this by saying I do not yet own the Bentley manual for my van. I have
ordered one but it has not arrived. Please allow me this question without
referring me to the Bentley.
My sliding door handle is broken off. The handle and the lock mech are
riding around in the back of my van. I have looked at the Haynes manual but
the door looks different than my door. My problem is I cannot open the door.
Of course missing the handle would not allow me to open it from outside.
However, the inside handle works but the door will not open. The back of the
door opens up away from the body but the front part will not break free. I
have followed the VW manual and made sure the lock was unlocked (as best I
can) but still nothing. Is there any way that a complete mechanical novice
can get his door working again? I am purchasing a new door handle but I have
a hunch that I need other parts as well. Any one willing to offer their
opinion on this one.
Many thanks in advance.
Scott Cowan
1980 Westy as of yet unnamed.
