Are you referring to the filter that Bentley shows
sitting between the gas tank and the pump ? My Vanagon
has what Bentley calls the "California" setup, a large
cylindrical filter after the pump and that has been replaced.
I am curious about the filter placement, intuitively
I'd want the filter before the pump and I'll probably add
one there.
Ultimately paranoia prevailed, I decided to replace both
the pressure regulator and the pump. They both looked to be
original and I got a decent price from a local shop. The fuel
pump was full of crap when I pulled it, so I will be adding
the filter between the gas tank and the pump.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
