Greg,

I think this is a valid concern. I would think that if your hatch and engine cover seals are working properly you reduce the amount of exhaust gasses seeping into the interior. I also think that this would apply to all Vanagons, since even the stock exhaust exits to the rear. My current Dynomax muffler was fitted with an extension that dumps exhaust gasses to the side of the vehicle just behind the right rear wheel for that very reason.

Hello folks,

My bus is in need of a new exhaust, So I had pretty much decided on new heater boxes, and the four tip GT monza style exhaust system from bus boys. ( 210-25023 Exhaust System with 4 Tips $87.98 at http://www.bus-boys.com/performexsyt.html#replace . However, I just found this article, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vintagebus/message/17007 , i t warns about the dangers of getting carbon monoxide in the cab when using non factory exhaust systems, Basically, the argument is that exhaust systems that dump exhaust straight out the back rather than out the side, deposit carbon monoxide into the turbulent air behind the bus, where it is sucked back in through the engine porthole and other holes and vents. What do you folks think? Is this a valid theory, or should I just bolt on my four chrome tipped system and not worry about it?

Thanks folks,

Greg, 82 Vanagon L Westfalia.
