84 Vanagon GL two-tone blue. 115K miles, basic engine in good condition. Good compression, no leaks. Interior good, glass ok, body ok except accident damage in right rear corner. It has been in two accidents, hit in right rear wheel well area both times. The right taillight is broken. After the last accident, I began some of the body straightening with a portapower and corrected the structural problems. The sliding door doesn't shut completely yet. I replaced the lower control arm and the stub axle and the right axle with both CV joints. Starting a couple weeks before the last accident it wasn't running right. It was missing, didn't have full power. The spark plug on the right rear cylinder was black and wet with fuel, but the others looked ok. I have checked out the electrical stuff per the service manual and it seems to be ok. Since this is my first vehicle with fuel injection, I stopped here at the height of my incompetence and have not taken it in for "professional" help. My wife hates it, due to the manual transmission and her two accidents, so it hasn't been a priority to fix. I liked the space and the way it drove and still threaten to fix it, but get lots of static from the war department. It doesn't have a battery at this time and has not been started for about 3 years. My complaints are related to the driveability issue and my lack of experience in what to do about it and the price of parts. I have replaced the starter, the water pump, the clutch, the slave cylinder, the left exhaust pipe, distributor cap, spark plugs and wires, oxygen sensor, and repaired the transmission. (Transmission would not shift into first or second gear, quit on my way to work. When I found out that a used one cost $750 if it was available, but wasn't, I was motivated to repair it. The problem turned out to be a broken shift lever, which I had repaired at work. I put it back together using new gaskets and replaced the clutch and release bearing since the transmission was out.) The transmission is now fine, but doesn't run well enough to drive it anywhere. Due to all of the work I put into it and the high price of parts, I figure it owes me around $1000. However, I would accept some loss and accept $650 to maintain some peace in the family. It is located at my home in Mukwonago, Wisconsin (near Milwaukee). I can be reached at home at 262-363-5357 or
